A Moment: Moments Series (Volume 1), by Marie Hall (Author)

momentA chance meeting… Life didn’t turn out the way I’d ever hoped it would. I got pregnant at 14. Same year my mom got diagnosed with MS. Dad bailed on us and my life felt like it suddenly started to spiral out of control. I’m 21 now, I go to college, I work hard, trying to make something of myself. I wasn’t supposed to be at that burlesque bar Valentine’s Day. I wasn’t supposed to meet Ryan Cosgrove, but I did. And now nothing will ever be the same. Love born from pain… I’m a retired Marine, an MMA fighter, and when I was younger something terrible happened to me. Life is hard and I’m so tired of pretending its not. I’m in a burlesque bar, drowning my sorrows, trying to shut out the demons breathing down my neck always reminding me I’m not good enough. Then I see Liliana Delgado and something inside of me- something I’d thought long dead- stirs to life. I wonder… can she save me? I hope she can, because I don’t think I can save myself. This is our moment…

About the Author

Marie loves books that make you think, or feel something. Preferably both. And while she’s a total girly girl and loves glitter and rainbows, she’s just as happy when she’s writing about the dark underbelly of society. Well, if things like zombies, and vampires, and werewolves, and mermaids existed. (Although she has it on good authority that mermaids do in fact exist, because the internet told her so.) She’s married to the love of her life, a sexy beast of a caveman who likes to refer to himself as Big Hunk. She has two awesome kids, lives in Hawaii, loves cooking and occasionally has been known to crochet. She also really loves talking about herself in the third person. REVIEW:
In a story that is vastly different from previous reads from her, Marie Hall brings us a contemporary, New Adult story that is romantic, heart wrenching, difficult and fully geared to readers who enjoy romance fiction.

In each of the stories that I have read from Marie, she imbues her characters with such lifelike qualities and issues that they literally could walk among us, and probably do. This is a twist, in which she deals with some very serious elements for her characters, and yet each is presented with care: allowing the reader to slowly digest the information and start to develop empathy for the characters before the secrets are uncovered.

Both Lili and Ryan are likable characters: Lili is far more sympathetic and easy to relate to. Often I was relying on her innate sense that there was something and someone worth knowing in Ryan to not want to skip over his sections of the story. I’m glad that her belief in Ryan kept me reading, his backstory and the secrets he held deep within are just waiting to burst out and bring forward a resolution. This story demanded that I read through to the end, even the darker elements were treated with detail and care, with character voices and reactions being realistic and even refreshing to read for those who may have been in similar situations.

This is the start of a series of “moments” in time for characters – although I do hope that we return to Lili and Ryan’s story, the conclusion was satisfactory and did tie up any hopeful questions I would have had for their ongoing relationship. Certainly a book for adults, the story is emotional and difficult to read at times, but situations are real, gritty and possibly relevant to many readers today.
